Sri Lanka is just so much better than India there are actually hardly things which are better in India than in Sri Lanka, food might be the only thing.
As you might have noticed, I didn’t like India at all, but I absolutely love Sri Lanka. This has so many different reasons. In short: Sri Lanka is clean, has friendly people, fantastic nature, honest people, more or less organized streets, and is cheap – Most of which India hasn’t.
People:
The most annoying part about India are the people. Yes, there are more nice people then scammers and whatever. But as a tourist, you mostly get in contact with the annoying ones – Taxi drivers, tour operators, or annoying roommates in Hostels. I had so many scams or attempted scams in India; I lost count.
People in Sri Lanka, however, are so lovely and way more honest than in India. I don’t say there are no scams; I also got scammed by a mechanics, and some people tried their luck to scam me, but it’s so much less than in India. Yes, tuk-tuk drivers are annoying even in Sri Lanka, but it’s still way more relaxed than the ones in India.
Streets:
It’s a pleasure to drive on the Streets in Sri Lanka. Most of the Streets are in good quality, they are clean, and there isn’t much chaos. People mostly respect the traffic rules, and the horn only 1/10 of the people in India. I drove nearly 2000 km with my Tuk-tuk all over the island and enjoyed every single drive.
Food:
Ok, here the point goes to India. Indian food is hard to top, and they got a wide range of different dishes all across the country. In Sri Lanka, only a few national recipes are available. With rice and curry the main one. It’s rice and 3 to 4 different vegetable curries. You can also add chicken or seafood, and it’s super tasty. Local sourced and fresh seasonal vegetables make the whole even extremely healthy.
Nature:
Both countries have fantastic nature with Sri Lanka as an island full of beautiful beaches on the one side and India as this enormous country with all kinds of different nature. Even though Sri Lanka has less variety, it still wins this point for me because it’s so much cleaner. There is hardly any place in India without tons of waste. Dirty beaches and dirty streets next to the most beautiful nature just destroys the experience. Sri Lanka has beautiful beaches with hardly any waste on it.
In General, Sri Lanka is just so much better than India. It doesn’t have that much culture and history, but it also doesn’t have scams and annoying people like in India. In the end, I regret to spend two months in India, and only three weeks in Sri Lanka; it should have been the other way round.
